Area of a Polar Region**

  • Using our understanding of area under a curve defined in rectangular coordinates, we can derive a formula for the area of a region bounded by a polar curve.

  • While we used rectangles and trapezoids with finding approximate area under a curve using Riemann sums, for polar curves we use the Riemann sum again, but the rectangles are replaced by sectors of a circle.

    • The sectors can be used to approximate the area bounded by polar curves.
